QUICKIE OF THE WEEK: A short interview with Rossella Moscatello (FALSE MEMORIES)

written by Marko Jakob

Pix666: Hello Rossella. Thanks for your time. How are you doing these days, are you alive and well? How are the other guys of False Memories?

Rossella: Hi everyone! Thank you too for inviting me. Here in Italy is fine, except for the lockdown, haha of course! Fortunately we are all fine and at work on the new releases!

Pix666: Please introduce your band to the readers in a few short sentences. You joined the band later, how did the contact to the guys come about? What was your inspiration to become a musician? What kind of music does False Memories make?

Rossella: Ok! So, we are an italian “dark/doom metal” band with prog influences. The band is formed by 5 members: me at vocals, Francesco (the founder) at the lead guitars, Moreno at guitars, Gianluca at the bass and last but not least our drum machine, Emanuele. I have joined the band at the end of 2018. I was found by Francesco, but not for False Memories! He has the intention to create a b-side project with me, but I wasn’t keen to that idea. I were in love with his main project, False Memories.

Few months later he contacts me another time to say that their singer leaved the band and asked me if I was interested to join False Memories, and… Guess my answer? About your third question: I have always loved music, since from when I was a little child. When I was 3 y.o. I fell in love for Freddie Mercury’ s voice! I have always sung even though I was my self teacher. At 14y.o. I started to take some piano lessons, but 2 years later I had my first serious approach with a singing teacher.

We do a sort of gothic metal with gloomy atmospheres, Doom rithmics and prog influences, as I told you before.

Pix666: Two years ago, the first songs of the band with your voice were released. The videos for ‘Trembling Sky’ and ‘Heavenly’ are beautiful. Where did you shoot the videos back then and were you already on tour with False Memories? What have been the greatest experiences so far?

Rossella: Thank you so much! Well, we have done those videos in Milan. There is a studio with big rooms in which you can find various styles and scenaries.

About our last gigs, with ‘Chimerical’ we toured only in Italy, expecially in the north because our priority was to start here. We had a lot of beautiful esxperiences: I loved to play in Ruvido Barber Rock Club, in Padua (was our first official live show of which I have beautiful memories about it). I also remember our first gig at Legend Club (one of the best locations where we have played and a family for us!), and at Midnight Club in Bergamo (nice gloomy place, nice owners and friends).

Pix666:  Now your first song from the new, forthcoming album is out and the next video release of “Rain Of Souls” is coming soon. What were the main differences of the album production and the video shoot due to the restrictions of Corona compared to other productions under normal conditions?

Rossella: The recording process wasn’t much different: we all, you know, wore masks, respected social distancing etc. I have had my recording sessions at Ivory Tears Music Works, whilst the others at the Twilight Studio. Same for music videos but with the advantages of using the green screen: in fact, we weren’t actually together in the shootings. All the filming was done individually for each band member. Involuntarily, we chose the best way to shoot the scenes!

Pix666: There have already been 80,000 views on YouTube. How were the fans’ reactions to the first new song? Do you know in which countries False Memories is listened most?

Rossella: That this is a big result if you consider that we haven’t payed some extra’s to grow the views. I think that is pretty awesome and the label is doing a solid work with us. About our first single ‘Voices’, our thought is that our fans appreciated it as well and we are very happy with this! We get a lot of messages every day for ‘Voices’, a lot of people say that they love our first new single and that they have already pre-ordered the whole album: it’s fantastic! We think that our audience is more concentrated in Italy, but we have noticed that there is a huge number of fans all around the globe. We have fan of our music from USA, Mexico, Italy, Germany, UK, Japan, Australia, Greece and…many more countries!

Pix666: On May 7 your new album ‘The Last Night Of Fall’ will finally be released. What can the fans expect on the album? In which versions can the fans buy your album, and above all, where? Is it already available for pre-order?

Rossella: After they have listened to ‘Voices’, they already can begin to understand the “universe” that is in the rest of the songs that compose the whole album. As I see it, the singles are only the top of the iceberg, but the listeners can already guess what awaits them. ‘The Last Night Of Fall’ is a highly sought-after album, full of nuances, details, usable but complex at the same time. Francesco and I wrote it to give our listeners a journey into their own psyche: the tracks were born from fragments of felt emotions, from lived experiences. That said, I wish you a good trip inside of it! Of course, the album is already available for pre-order, both the physical copy and the digital format are in all the stores around the globe.

Pix666: You have signed a contract with the renowned label Frontiers Music srl. What are the advantages of such a strong partner for your band?

Rossella: We were very thrilled after they approved the material we submitted to them. Frontiers Music Srl is a big reality and a family with a lot of kind people and solid workers. They are a force and toghether we will do great things, I am sure of it! Surely we are an ambitious band, we love to work hard on our music, we constantly grew up as a band on our own but now everything is much better with Frontiers Music Srl. In my opinion, one of the advantages is to be part of their diverse roster, that grows day by day.

Pix666: The pandemic unfortunately still has us in its grip, in Germany we are even in a lockdown again. Nevertheless, is False Memories already planning some 2021 concerts or festivals?

Rossella: Here in Italy it’s not much different, don’t feel alone! We are just planning a release party for the new album in Milan. In these days we are defining some details about the release party with the Club that we have chosen and some dates in 2021, but at the moment we are working only on Italy’s concerts. Of course: we will plan as soon as possibile international gigs and tours. About festivals, we have no idea whether they will be possibile in the next months. The last festival in which we were in the bill was Milady Metal Festival of Mantua, the 2020 edition: that event was postponed because the pandemic and we don’t know yet when it will be possibile to eventually do it.

Pix666: What is the current situation in Italy and especially the mood among the people?

Rossella: There is a critical situation here. People have charged the blow of this pandemic in different ways. A lot of people haven’t lost their job, and mainly all the people are tired and stressed because of the pandemic. I don’t deny you that these are very hard times for me too: my business has drastically lowered. I have to thank all the people and fans that have done their pre-order of the new album or bought our merch, it means a lot for us, expecially now.

Pix666: As a musician, you certainly spend most of your time creating music – but what else do you do in your free time when you want to get your mind off things – are there any interesting hobbies that you pursue?

Rossella: Of course! I love so much to work out. I spend a lot of time doing music or listen to It because it is my main passion, but another favorite activity of mine is sport. Usually I do some circuits, having some bodybuilding sessions, but very often I enjoy nature with a nice and long walk in the riverside or a great run. I think that it is the perfect way to calm and reset your mind.

Pix666: Do you have any other news, that you would like to share with the fans?

Rossella: Not properly an imminent news, but we are already working on new stuff! As you can see, ‘The Last Night Of Fall’ is very different from ‘Chimerical’, but only because the band has now found its dimension: you can explore it more deeply with the next album!

Pix666: Thank you very much for the interesting answers – Good luck with the new album and stay healthy!!!

Rossella: Thank you guys for having me with you in this nice talk. Stay safe, metal-hugs!
