QUICKIE OF THE WEEK: A short interview with Tainá Bergamaschi (Crypta)

written by Marko Jakob | 12.03.2022 |

Pix666: Hello Tainá. Thank you for your time for this interview. How are you doing these days?

Tainá: I thank you for the space and opportunity to talk about our work. I’m doing well, thanks! We’re working hard to finish the songs on our second album, and we’re two months away from hitting the road, so I’m also really looking forward to it.

Pix666: Tainá, when exactly did you realise that you wanted to become a musician – how did it all start, who or what inspired you?

Tainá: My connection to music has always been very strong since I was a kid. I used to get easily excited when playing any music around me. But when I got to know Rock and finally Heavy Metal, things changed a lot. The first metal music video I watched I remember well was Children of Bodom’s ‘In Your Face’. When I saw him playing, screaming, I’ve never seen people expressing themselves so much with the music, with so much attitude. Then, I decided that this was what I wanted to be. I was 12 at the time. At 14 years old I had my first band, since then I haven’t stopped.

Pix666: You joined Crypta in 2020 – were you already active in other bands before and how did the contact to the girls of Crypta come about?

Tainá: The last band I played before Crypta was Hagbard in 2017. A folk metal band.I had a breakdown with music and I took a break for a few months. It was very difficult to find people who really wanted to make music and make a living from it. Everyone in a band has to agree to make it happen, so I had a moment of disappointment. Just before the Crypta, I made some appearances on stage, which fueled the flame inside me to get back to playing again.

A few months later, I saw that Fernanda and Luana were putting together a Death Metal project, and I didn’t know if they had a guitarist. They didn’t know me, so I got in touch with Fernanda to introduce myself: ”Hello, I play guitar, if you need a guitarist, I exist” hahaha. That was basically it. So, afeter a long talk, I uploaded some videos and played some ready-made songs from the band for them. And this is how I joined Crypta.

Pix666: Most of your band’s history so far has taken place during the period when the Covid Pandemic is sweeping the world. What difficulties did that bring for you, also in view of the fact that not all band members are from Brazil?

Tainá: I confess that the obligation to stay at home made some things easier for the band. We were just finishing writing Echoes of the Soul, and the pandemic gave us enough time to work calmly, and also work on pre-production for the album. We had some negatives, at least for me, I was the only one who didn’t know any of the girls personally. I literally met them in person when we stepped into the studio to record the album, we didn’t even have rehearsals together before the recording.

It was the first time the band got together after Crypta was created, in 2019. ‘Echoes of the Soul’ was recorded in January 2021. But still, we all live far from each other, even for me, Fernanda and Luana, who live in Brazil, it’s very difficult for us to meet. So naturally, we’ll keep doing everything from a distance, at least until the tours start, where we’ll practically live together, haha.

Pix666: You managed to make a deal with the well-known and experienced label Napalm Records – how did the contact come about and what advantages do you gain from this cooperation?

Tainá: We love working with Napalm Records. It’s a very attentive team that believes in us a lot. We’ll always be very grateful to be working with them. Basically, when Fernanda announced her departure from Nervosa, which is also signed to the same label, they asked her for Crypta demos, as they wanted to hear her new project. From there, Napalm Records had a great interest in working with Crypta.

Pix666: Last year you released your fantastic debut album ‘Echoes of the Soul’, which was released worldwide. How does it feel when people all over the world can buy your CDs and how were the reactions to your debut?

Tainá: This is amazing. It’s amazing how it feels to know that your work is being recognized in so many different places. The amount of messages we’ve received from so far in support of our fans is unbelievable. Knowing that we will be able to play in all these countries and that they will be there, waiting to enjoy our music. This is priceless.

Pix666: A highlight for you last summer was certainly the release of the video for the song ‘From The Ashes’. Where did you shoot it and how long does such a production actually take? Did you experience some funny moments during the shoot that you don’t want to keep from the fans?

Tainá: Ah, the recording of From The Ashes was amazing. We work with a super cooperative team, with the direction of André Gustavo who does a magnificent job. It took two days of recording. One day offsite and second day in the studio. I think the funniest thing was that the crew built all the coffins so we could pull them out during the clip, and I didn’t have the strength for it, haha! We had to pull them countless times.

My hand was so sore and bruised that in the night, when we recorded the playing scenes, I could barely bear to do the chords. On the second day the most special part was definitely the scene of us falling. The feeling was incredible. And as it was the last scene recorded, it gave us that air of accomplishment, we did our best. I would do it all again. Hope to have more experiences like this!

Pix666: A few days ago your new video ‚I resign‘ was released. The song wasn‘t on your debut album. Will ‚I resign‘ be available for purchase soon, or is it already part of the next album?

Tainá: Pre-order is now available for this song on the 7” LP version! Which also contains a live track of the song ‘Shadow Within’. ‘I Resign’ is a lost bonus track from the Echoes of the Soul album. The elements of this song provide a bridge of connection for our next album. Since this is a song I worked on most of when I joined the band, and now I’m working more on the new songs. When I joined the band, there were already many songs written that almost completed an entire record. So I wrote ‘I Resign’ as a bonus track.

Pix666: Have you actually been allowed to play live shows together in the past, or did the pandemic throw a spanner in the works of your tour plans and are there already fixed plans for 2022?

Tainá: The band’s first ever tour will begin in May 2022. We did some performances in November 2021, but we decided to wait a little longer to start traveling because of the pandemic.

Pix666: Tell me a little bit about your dreams…. In which locations or at which festivals would you like to perform and with which band(s) would you like to go on tour in the future?

Tainá: I think every metalhead’s dream that has a band is to be able to play at Wacken Open Air, for me it’s no different. We’ll be performing at this year’s edition in August, and just talking about it gives me goosebumps. I’ve dreamed of going to Wacken for many years to watch the bands I like. Knowing that my first time at the festival is going to be to play, it’s surreal. I think my dream band to tour together is Gojira. A band that has a very strong meaning for me, and is a huge influence. Our first tour will be with Belphegor, they’re a band I really like, and I’m super excited to play with them for sure.

Pix666: Tainá, as a musician, you certainly spend most of your time creating music – but what else do you do in your free time when you want to get your mind off things – are there any interesting hobbies that you pursue?

Tainá: My favorite hobby is definitely spending the late afternoon/evening in a forest. Having wine and listening to the songs I like. One of my favorite bands to listen to in these places is Woods of Ypres. But sometimes I also like the silence, the sound of the trees beating. Silence can often be our greatest inspiration.

Pix666: Do you have any other news that you would like to share with the fans?

Tainá: We are very excited to start the shows, very soon we will be closer to each of you bringing our music. In the meantime, we’re finishing up the songs for our second album, and we’re doing our best to deliver an amazing job for you. See you soon on the road!

Pix666: Thank you very much for the interesting answers – good luck for the future and stay healthy!!!

Tainá: Thank you so much for inviting us to be here telling you my/our story. Means a lot. Take care, see you on the road!
